November 2009 Newsletter

Hi Everyone! Can it really be November already? Its amazing how quickly time is flying by. Now that the holidays are among us, its time to start all those holiday projects if you haven't done so already. If you haven't, check out our class schedule this month. We have some classes planned that will definitely inspire you to get started on those Christmas presents!

Before we get into the classes for this month, we have a bit of announcements to make:

Craft Nights at Island Scrapbooking
Beginning this Friday, 11/6/09, we will be hosting Craft Nights at Island Scrapbooking. Every first Friday of the month one of the Design Team members will host Craft Night which will include either a demo, product info or a make 'n take. We thought it would be fun for everyone to get together in an informal setting to learn more about how to use different products or do a fun make 'n take. Our first Craft Night will be hosted by Jenny and the topic will be Copics 101. This discussion will provide a very basic introduction to Copic Markers. We thought this would be a good topic since so many of our customers ask so many questions about this awesome tool. Please note that this will not be a blending class. If there is enough interest, we may do another Copics session at a later date.
Crafts Nights will be held after work on the first Friday of every month starting at 5:00pm till ~ 6:30pm. Its a great chance to do some after hours shopping too! Right now, anyone can stop by to attend, but if space becomes an issue, we may require you to sign up in advance for future Craft Nights.

In addition to information provided, we will also be hosting a Card Drawing. Similar to a "one card swap", participants can bring in a handmade card, which will be numbered. After all entries are in, all participants will pull numbers and whatever number you pull will be the card you go home with! We thought this would be fun way to exchange cards without all the headache of creating a ton of cards! Please note- you DO NOT have to participate in the Card Drawing in order to attend the Craft Night, we just thought this would be a fun new thing to add for our customers. The more people that participate, the more fun it will be, so hope you join in the fun!

Pop Up Fhiona Card

We can't get enough of Fhiona from Your Next Stamp! On the front of the card I used Yippee Fhiona on top of a Sizzix Cupcake. I think anyone would want a huge cupcake like that.. wouldn't you?
On the inside, I used the pop up heart Sizzix die to make Fhiona pop up off the card. This die is really easy to us and makes pop ups a no-brainer.

Halloween Items On Sale!

Just wanted to let everyone know that beginning tomorrow, 10/29, select Halloween items are on sale. Stop in to get those last minute Halloween items before its too late! Select Halloween paper will be buy one get one free.

Butterfly Thank You

Since we now carry new sentiment laser cuts like Thank You, Happy Birthday and With Sympathy, Tracy decided to make a thank you card using them. The background is stamped using a Hero Arts large leave image and then a Labels # 9 die was cut from this cute Bo Bunny butterfly paper. To accent the card, she used the Large Butterfly punch and made the wings flutter but doubling them up. The bottom was punched using a Martha Stewart arch border punch. If you look at the Thank You in person, she made it look like wood!

Spellbinder Pendant Projects

Donna does it again with some great coordinating projects! She used several Sizzix dies as the base for her projects and decorated them with the new Spellbinder pendants. This technique can turn your card or other project into something special since it gives it a lot of dimension.
This first project was made using the Sizzix XL box die. The pendant was cut from the Spellbinder kaleidoscope die and then folded in half to create a cut line. She then cut on the line to the middle of the circle, and folded hill and valley folds. This was repeated again and the two pieces were connected together. Very simple but fabulous!

The the same technique was made using the Spellbinder pendant with the hearts. Donna made this gable box/bag using those small white packages you see throughout the store.

This next bag was made using the Sizzix Scallop Bag #2 die.

Finally, the last project was a bag made from using the Sizzix Cupcake die! Who knew this die was so versatile?
What great creations Donna came up with! If you want to learn how to do this, just ask! If enough people ask, we may do this as one of our Craft Night projects.
Supplies:
Pendants- Spellbinders
Cardstock- Bazzil
DP- Kaisercraft, Doodlebug, Reminisce
Flowers- Prima, Hero Arts
Pearls- Hero Arts
Box, bag, and cupcake die- Sizzix
Paper bags

Cupcake Cutie Fhiona

We just love Your Next Stamp's Fhiona images! Tracy made a card using the Cupcake Cutie set and Island Scrapbooking's new Happy Birthday laser cuts. In addition to Happy Birthday, we also have With Sympathy and Thank You. These are great for cardmakers since all the letters are connected, so less fiddling with individual letters! Here's a close up of the word Happy.
Here's a close up of Fhiona with her birthday cupcake! She is a cupcake cutie!

Supplies:
Cupcake Cutie- Fhiona
Happy Birthday image- Island Scrapbooking

The fairy was mounted on a scallop circle and then onto a Sizzix Scallop Bag.

Introducing Craft Nights at Island Scrapbooking!

We had so much fun at the 6th Anniversary party, that we thought, why not invite our customers to hang out more often??? We enjoy everyone's company so much that we thought it would be fun to stay open late one night a month where customers can come in, learn something new and enjoy each other's company. Sound like fun?

We hope you plan on joining us for our first Craft Night at Island Scrapbooking beginning on November 6th. We are looking at doing this the first Friday of every month.

Craft Nights will include:
  • Demos
  • Make 'N Takes
  • New Product Info
  • or just plain fun!

AND

A Card "Drawing": Similar to a card "swap" but you only need to bring ONE card! This means you can spend more time and really make your card special. This will be open to anyone who wants to participate, but it is not a requirement to attend- only if you feel like it. Here's how it will work:

  • Bring one handmade card (made by you!)
  • We will then number all the cards submitted by participants.
  • Everyone who participates will draw numbers and you will receive the card with the same number that you picked.
  • You can only re-draw if you picked your own card.

Our first Craft Night will be an informational session on Copic Markers. Since Island Scrapbooking has brought in these awesome markers, they have been flying out of the store, but a lot of our customers have asked us how to use them, so we thought this would be a great topic for our first Craft Night! Your's Truly (Jenny) will be giving some basic information about Copics. Later on, if there's enough interest, I may do another session on blending techniques. (Disclaimer: I am NOT a certified Copics instructor, so I'm just winging it!).

All Craft Nights are free and anyone can attend. We just thought this would be a fun way for our customers to get together, learn something new, and talk story.

To kick things off, Michele will be donating a prize where one random participant will win a variety of Copic products, including a pen case! Estimated value of the prize is $65!! How awesome is that?

So I'm going to resort to begging now... don't make me show up and I'm the only one there! :) hee hee. Seriously, we hope that you can make it to these fun nights!

We are also looking for ideas and would like your feedback on what you would like to see at these Craft Nights. We'll be polling whoever shows up on the first night, but if you can't make it, please let Michele or Tracy know what you'd like to learn about so we can look into it.

(Note: November 6th is Black and White Night in Downtown Hilo. If you are planning on attending our first Craft Night, please keep this in mind as parking may be limited. Island Scrapbooking is not participating in Black and White Night, but we will remain open for our first Craft Night).

So mark your calendars and start working on those cards! Hope to see you there!

Your Next Stamp Fhiona Spinner

Yippee Fhiona is the perfect stamp for penny spinner cards. Doesn't she look like she's doing cartwheels? Jenny used this floral paper by K and Co. to make Fhiona look like she's spinning in a flower patch.
Your Next Stamp is a new stamp company based out of Canada. These stamps come unmounted, so you will need to mount them on some type foam cling so that you can use the stamps with an acrylic block. After you mount them, they are ready to be used over and over! Your Next Stamps are sold as sets, so you get coordinating stamps in every set! We are currently out of Yippee Fhiona, but if you want to order one, please contact the store.

Fleur De Lis Card

Our customer Val made this beautiful card using the new Spellbinder Fleur De Lis pendant. She made the pendant literally pop up off the page! We all had to study it to figure out how she did it! Still can't really figure it out, need to look at it again!
She even added some pretty pearl accents and topped it off with a contrasting red flower and bow.
Thank you Val! This card is breathtaking!

Congratulations to all of our winners. There were more winners throughout the day who got cute cake box favors (see photo above) filled with candy and stamps, AND another prize to take home. In addition, we also had hourly drawings where those who were in the store at the time were entered in a chance to win. Here's two of our lucky winners showing off their winnings..

What's a party without cake? Customers were also treated to these cupcakes. Debi decorated them with handmade picks that said "Happy 6th Anniversary".

Customers were treated to 2 free make 'n takes that day. Jenny started the say off with a cute scallop bag made to look like a mini purse, using the new Two Scooops Rice stamps. A photo will be posted later for this project.

Here is Debi showing her make 'n take that started off as the large popsicle card... but later evolved to the baby popsicle card! How cute is that??

New Products At Island Scrapbooking

For those of you who couldn't join us today for our 6th Anniversary,we brought in 3 new stamp companies just for the occasion! Dandelion Designs, Two Scoops Rice, and Your Next Stamp have all joined the Island Scrapbooking family of products and boy did our customers love them!
Dandelion Designs..including the new Christmas releases! See the elephant, panda and mouse??

Debi made this cute pumpkin card using the Turkey Dandelion stamp and oval spellbinders to make the pumpkin.

Our customer Sharon made this penny spinner card also using the Turkey stamp..

The sentiment says "The hunters are coming... Run!!" ... that is too funny!

The crowd favorite was definitely Two Scoops Rice! Several of these stamps/sets flew out the door in no time!

Finally, Your Next Stamp made it's debut in Hilo. These Fhiona stamps are really cute! Each set comes with several stamps that coordinate together. The great thing about these is that they are a good size, which make them easy to color (and blend!).

Here Jenny made a Fhiona Card using the Rainy Days Fhiona. She's perfectly dressed for Hilo weather! See how Jenny used stickles on acetate to make it look like it is raining?

We had so much fun introducing all the new product lines to our customers! Be sure to check back here soon for more fun samples using these new stamps!
